Mild-mannered Arthur (Terry Camilleri) wakes up in a hospital in the country town of Paris after running off the road in a car accident that killed his brother. The mayor (John Meillon) takes Arthur under his wing, but Arthur senses that things are not right in Paris, from the youths who rule the streets at night in souped-up cars to the hospital is full of accident victims. And then Arthur discovers he is not allowed to leave… An Australian New Wave classic, The Cars That Ate Paris made a splash at Cannes and the Chicago International Film Festival when it was first released, helping to establish Australian cinema and director Peter Weir on the global stage. The NFSA digital restoration premiered at the 2024 Sydney Film Festival.
