Building from our recent Library Series and our March meeting on asset mapping, ConR returns to the Southfield Public Library to continue our conversation and link our personal assets, shared values, and community vision to action.
Whether you’ve attended another ConR event or this is your first time joining us, everyone is welcome! While our meeting is focused on Southfield, the content and process is adaptable to any community – we can learn from one another as we see how different communities approach advocacy and racial justice work. We can also build a stronger network of people committed to racial justice across metro Detroit.
In this workshop, we will consider how our beliefs and assets inform and shape our advocacy work. We will:
- Review our individual and community assets. Where is there common ground and where do we differ? Why is this information important for racial justice work?
- Create strategies for conversation and actions that reflect our values and make use of our assets.
- Explore how our beliefs and values motivate us to take action. What are the underlying beliefs or values that shape our individual and community based assets?
- Identify individual and collective actions –what are your next steps beyond the Conversations on Race meeting? Who can support or take action with you?
If you missed the March meeting, here’s a short video describing Asset Based Community Development:
You can also prepare for the meeting by thinking about your own personal assets:
- What are your individual assets? What skills, abilities, or knowledge do you possess?
- What neighborhood or community associations do you have? Examples include religious groups, neighborhood book clubs, school or alumni foundations, charitable efforts.
- What institutional associations do you have? Are you connected to schools, health organizations, banks, libraries, religious institutions, law enforcement agencies, or local government?
- You could also consider the ways these assets connect or your historical and cultural knowledge of the community you live in.
