With Christmas fast approaching, it seems like an appropriate time to screen a musical, but this ain't no Mary Poppins. Newsies tells the story of the 1899 New York paperboys' strike.

The newsies were orphans and poor children who were exploited to sell newspapers. They had to buy the papers up front, and they got to keep the profits, but on poor news days they were left with large quantities of unsold papers which were non-refundable. When the cost of the papers rose, the children organised and rebelled.
