Set in 1936, two professional grifters (Robert Redford and Paul Newman) try to con a mob boss (Robert Shaw). The screenplay, by David S. Ward, was inspired by real-life cons perpetrated by brothers Fred and Charley Gondorff and documented by David Maurer in his 1940 book The Big Con: The Story of the Confidence Man. Noted for its use of ragtime, the film created a resurgence of interest in the work of Scott Joplin, adapted for the film by Marvin Hamlisch. The film's success created a resurgence of interest in Joplin's work. Regarded by the Writers Guild of America as having one of the best screenplays ever written, The Sting won seven Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director.
