German-born bassist/composer Kai Eckhardt moved to the United States to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied under Gary Burton and was introduced to John McLaughlin. In 1988, he joined McLaughlin’s Trio, and is credited with making history by pushing the envelope of fusing modern jazz with South Indian classical music.
