About this Event
We are delighted to present a lecture about fascinating Samothrace in collaboration with the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. Dr. Bonna D. Wescoat — Director of the American School, Emory University’s Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Art History, head of excavations at Samothrace — discusses this tiny windswept island located in the northern Aegean Sea. During antiquity, its fame emanated from its mystery cult of the Great Gods, also known as the Cabeiri. The rites of initiation promising protection in times of need were kept secret, but archaeology, 3D modeling, and experiential investigations provide an illuminating window into the efficacy of this famous cult and its rituals.
