DENVER HEIGHTS

Is one of the city’s older and historically African-American neighborhoods. Although only about a dozen city blocks wide, Denver Heights in its prime was home to bustling intersections of small business, churches, a thriving arts and music community and charming residences.

? This experience is being brought to you by Melaneyes Media, the producers of "Walk on the River: A Black History of the Alamo City."

Please arrive 30 min before the scheduled time as we will be leaving exactly at the time of the scheduled trip . Parking will be available at the Carver branch Library. This is where we will meet to load onto the chartered bus.

From the Carver Library on 3350 E Commerce Street, we will take a ride to visit a host of monumental sites including:

  • The Good Samaritan Hospital
  • Douglass School
  • Cuney Elementary School
  • Pittman Sullivan Park
  • Ms. Hicks Beauty School Location
  • Mt. Zion First Baptist Church
  • And More

As we tour the city, we will explain the history and cultural significance of the places we visit. This Historic Bus Tour is a result of the information and history revealed in the documentary film "Walk on the River."and was organized at the request of many of our supporters.

As the city grows and changes, as the “Eastside” (historically considered the Black side of town) becomes more gentrified, as historical locations and landmarks are being demolished or forgotten- we are doing our best to help preserve our own history and tell our own story.

The tour will take place on a modern 56 passenger charter bus which includes the following amenities:

  • Unobstructed View of Scenery
  • Tinted Windows
  • Controlled Climate System
  • Reclining Seats and Footrest
  • Individual Seat Lighting
  • On-Board Restroom Facilities
  • Overhead Storage for Carry-On Items
  • 110 Electrical Outlets
