This is a six-week history course that meets weekly on Wednesday 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm, starting on March 5.
New Perspectives on California History: From Prehistory to the Gold Rush
California’s history is undergoing constant, dynamic reinvention, as fresh discoveries and innovative research reveal new perspectives on the past and challenge old assumptions. This course will explore the saga of California history from its distinctive geography and the rich diversity of Native American life to the discovery of gold in 1848. Special attention will be given to the California Native Americans; Spanish, English, and Russian exploration; the Spanish and Mexican eras; American interest in California; the legendary Bear Flag Revolt; the Mexican American War in California; and the beginnings of the Gold Rush era.

About the Speaker:
Chris O’Sullivan has taught California history for more than two decades at the University of San Francisco where he is the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award as well as the Innovations in Teaching Prize. He has been a Fulbright Visiting Professor and has published six nonfiction books on historical topics. He has served on the boards of the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society, the Society of California Pioneers, the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, and is the founder of the Kevin Starr Memorial Lecture on California History.
