In this workshop you will learn binding techniques and creative approaches so you can create your own stunning books at home. We will make at least one oriental stubbed binding while developing essential skills over the weekend. We will design, cut, fold, punch, sew and adhere.
The New Oriental binding is based on the Japanese Stab binding with modification to improve the opening and stability. In the New Oriental Binding the folded signature is sewn on to a stub and the covers are made. Thanks to its clever configuration, this binding can open flat even with cross-grained paper. This binding allows for many different design possibilities that are not possible with the classic form. Leather, cloth, wood or paper may be used. The covers are finished off the book block providing great opportunity for innovation.
This workshop is suitable for everyone, no experience is necessary. More advanced participants will be encouraged to experiment with materials and consider adventurous design.
There is no charge for the workshop thanks to the generous support of Square Edge and the Association of Book Crafts (NZ) Incorporated. Materials can be supplied at cost upon request.
