Where does music criticism take place and what does it address? Music critics and academics reflect on their changing audience and platforms due to a proliferation of outlets for music criticism. Participants include Tyson Cornell of Rare Bird, Kevin Dettmar of Pomona College, Karen Tongson of USC, and Oliver Wang of CSU Long Beach, moderated by Karla Nielsen of The Huntington.

All are welcome! Registration is encouraged but not required.

LITLIT, or The Little Literary Fair, is a free celebration of independent book publishers, book makers, and booksellers on the West Coast.

Presented by the Los Angeles Review of Books in partnership with Hauser & Wirth Publishers, LITLIT offers local presses and literary arts organizations a unique, two-day opportunity to share their perspectives, books, and goods with Angelenos of all stripes at Hauser & Wirth in Downtown L.A.'s Arts District, 901 East 3rd Street.

ABOUT THE LOS ANGELES REVIEW OF BOOKS:

The Los Angeles Review of Books is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and disseminating rigorous, incisive, and engaging writing on every aspect of literature, culture, and the arts. In addition to publishing lively, intelligent long-form writing online and in print, LARB’s civic arts programs increase access to the world of literary and cultural production. The LARB Publishing Workshop aims to revolutionize the publishing industry from the ground up by training and mentoring early-career talent from diverse backgrounds. Held annually at the close of the Publishing Workshop, LITLIT aims to strengthen public and institutional support for independent presses and innovative publishing projects.

ABOUT THE PANELISTS:

Karla Nielsen (moderator) is the Curator of Literary Collections at the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens where she acquires rare books and modern literary archives, and curates exhibitions, most recently Mapping Fiction. Before becoming a rare book librarian, she worked as an editor for academic and small press publishers.

Tyson Cornell oversees publishing, acquisitions, and general business operations for Rare Bird, a press he founded in 2010. Rare Bird publishes books and records in all trade formats, including hardcover, trade paperback original, paperback, e-book, limited edition, vinyl audiobooks, as well as singles, EPs, compilations, and full-length records. For many years before Rare Bird he was the Marketing and Publicity Director of the Hollywood bookstore Book Soup.

Kevin Dettmar is the W. M. Keck Professor of English and Director of the Humanities Studio at Pomona College. With Jonathan Lethem he edited an anthology of American music criticism for the Library of America, SHAKE IT UP: Great American Writing on Rock and Pop From Elvis to Jay Z. His book on Gang of Four's album Entertainment! came out in 2014 with 33 1/3 Press. His cultural criticism appears regularly in The New Yorker and The Atlantic.

Karen Tongson is Professor and Chair of Gender and Sexuality Studies, and the director of the Consortium for Gender, Sexuality, Race & Public Culture at the University of Southern California. Her book Why Karen Carpenter Matters (2019) was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award in LGBTQ Nonfiction in the same year her existing body of work was awarded Lambda Literary’s Jeanne Córdova Award for Lesbian/Queer Nonfiction. She is also the author of Relocations: Queer Suburban Imaginaries (2011). Her writing and cultural commentary have appeared in Slate, NPR, Los Angeles Review of Books, L.A. Weekly, Los Angeles Times, and Buzzfeed Reader, among other public and scholarly forums. She and her Waiting to X-Hale podcast partner, Wynter Mitchell-Rohrbaugh co-curated the LA Phil’s GenX Festival in 2022. Photo credit: Betsy Seder.

Oliver Wang is Professor of Sociology at California State University Long Beach. His book Legions of Boom, on Filipino American DJ crews in the San Francisco Bay Area, came out in 2015 with Duke University Press. With Evelyn McDonnell, he is series editor of the Music Matters trade series for the University of Texas Press. Since 1994, he’s regularly written on music, food, and other pop culture for National Public Radio, KCET’s Artbound, the Los Angeles Review of Books, Wax Poetics and other publications. He’s been actively involved in podcasting for over 10 years, most recently on the album-oriented podcast, Heat Rocks, created alongside Morgan Rhodes. He’s currently developing a new podcast about Asian American listening practices.
