About this Event

NEW EARTH RISE

Led by Adam Jabari Jefferson

In-person | Saturdays 12-2pm | July 9 - 30, 2022

“Let a new earth rise. Let another world be born. Let a

bloody peace be written in the sky. Let a second

generation full of courage issue forth; let a people

loving freedom come to growth. Let a beauty full of

healing and a strength of final clenching be the pulsing

in our spirits and our blood. Let the martial songs

be written, let the dirges disappear. Let a race of men now

rise and take control.”

- Margaret Walker, “For My People” (1942)

The New Earth Rise workshop uses the final stanza of Margaret Walker’s 1942 poem, “For My People” as a creative entry point for the photographer as an agent for change. Participants in this workshop will explore photographic art and storytelling through the themes presented by Walker. We will play with speculative storytelling, movement, mediation and mixed media through the practice of digital photography.

Workshop will take place over four sessions, meeting in-person at Photographic Center Northwest (PCNW) on Saturdays 12-2pm, July 9, 16, 23 & 30. Sessions will include lecture, guest presentations, discussion, time to generate work and explore collaborations. Participants should expect an additional 4-6 hours weekly exercise outside of class. Open to participants ages 14+, with intention for intergenerational connection; open to all skill levels, though prior knowledge of basic camera operations will be helpful. Participants are welcome to use any camera available to them, including mobile devices. PCNW does have a limited number of digital cameras available for student use; if you would like to request use of a PCNW camera, please contact [email protected].

About the Photography as an Agent for Change Workshop Series:

Photographic Center Northwest (PCNW) is thrilled to announce our inaugural Agent for Change workshop series, in partnership with Amazon Photos. Beginning in 2022 we will offer a series of six free workshops and public lectures that explore photography as a tool for advancement in areas of social justice, racial equity, disability, environmental justice, visual literacy, storytelling, and cross cultural communications. Because the workshops are free and intended to reach a broad audience, a limited number of spots will be available to the public with the remaining spots reserved for partner nonprofits and community groups. A free public educator talk will coincide with each workshop, so if the workshop is sold out there will be another opportunity to hear the teaching artist speak on the subject.

At PCNW we are committed to providing accessible, inclusive photographic education and that often means through free programs and events. If you appreciate the work we do, please consider supporting us by donating or volunteering.
