Overview

The early diagnosis of neurotrophic keratitis (NK) is imperative to avoid such complications as ulceration, infection, stromal melting, perforation secondary to poor healing, and vision loss. Diagnosis can be challenging, because patients with early stages of NK may experience no symptoms and may therefore be diagnosed in later stages of the disease where epithelial damage has already begun. Current and emerging treatment options, when integrated optimally into management protocols, restore corneal sensitivity, and promote healing of the ocular surface, thus halting disease progression. In this CME activity, experts in the field review risk factors that contribute to the development of NK, discuss diagnostic and assessment techniques that improve the early detection and staging of disease, and evaluate the latest management and medical strategies for the optimal targeted treatment of patients with NK. This program will also include the unique, audience-engaging, educational gaming platform, Wheel of Knowledge.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Recognize the burden of NK and risk factors that contribute to its development.

  • Examine diagnostic and assessment techniques that improve the early detection and staging of NK.

  • Evaluate the latest evidence about management strategies that facilitate corneal epithelial healing as well as medical advances that target the treatment of NK.

Target Audience

The intended audience for this activity is ophthalmologists and other health care professionals involved in the management of patients with or at risk for NK.
