Neurodiversity VS Neurodivergence: Understanding Brain Difference in the Classroom
This workshop is intended to demystify some of the stigma surrounding neurodivergence in the mainstream classroom. It will offer teachers practical strategies in supporting learners with a particular focus on ADHD. It is intended to be an engaging and helpful session for teachers, giving them an opportunity to develop their knowledge in this area and to ask questions in a judgement-free environment. It is hoped that teachers will return to their classes feeling empowered and affirmed in what they know, are already doing and ready to take on new challenges.
Participants will develop an understanding of:
1. What neurodiversity and neurodivergence are, and why language matters.
2. What an invisible disability is and how it may present in the classroom.
3. The most common traits of ADHD and how to accommodate for these in the classroom.
4. What a neuroaffirming classroom looks like and sounds like.
5. The importance of building relationships with parents and how to do this.
6. De-privatising the classroom and working with other school staff to support neurodivergent learners.
