General Visitor FAQs
- Can anyone join a chapter? BNI permits only one person per professional specialty in each chapter. If your "seat" is already taken (e.g., there is already a residential realtor), you can be referred to another chapter or helped to start a new one.
- What is the meeting format? Most meetings last 90 minutes and follow a strict, proven agenda that includes open networking, member and visitor presentations, and a formal referral-exchange session.
- Do I have to speak? Yes. Everyone is required to stand and deliver a short "Weekly Presentation" (typically 30–60 seconds) about their business.
- What are the attendance requirements? Members can miss only three meetings in a rolling six-month period. You are encouraged to send a substitute if you cannot attend to ensure your seat is represented
Preparation & Etiquette
- What should I bring? Bring a stack of business cards (at least 30–50) and a way to take notes on the professionals you meet.
- When should I arrive? Arrive at least 15 minutes early for "open networking" before the formal agenda begins.
- What should I say in my 45-second pitch? Include your name, company, what you do, the problem you solve, and a specific "ask" for a referral you are looking for.
- How should I interact? Think "connect," not "sell." Focus on building trust and learning how you can help others' networks rather than trying to sell directly to the members in the room.
