Are artists powerless? How does art exist in times of crisis? How do you organise humanitarian art? What role does art play in preparedness and aid? What is Norways responsibility in funding arts as aid, education and health? ASSITEJ Norway invites everyone to a network gathering for artists and organizations with an interest in humanitarian art and how art can be used as humanitarian aid.
In this gathering we invite to an evening of networking, artistic showcases and two panels. As part of our TYAOslo residency we've invited artists, organizations, researchers and people in central positions to an evening of exploring the questions above.
The first panel will be focused on the work of performing artists who will talk about their own practices working with art as a medium for aid and humanitarian topics. What does it mean for an artist to create humanitarian art, how are they met and perceived and what is it like to meet audiences in precarious situations?
Confirmed participants include:
- Polina Struzhkova, director and performing artist
- MAx Provenzano, visual and performing artist
- Varun Narain, puppeteer and educator
- Bendik Nordgaard, manager and artist with Flying Seagulls Norway
The second talk will include organizations and researchers with a connection to arts. In this conversation they will focus on the responsibility of Norway as a state in funding art and how it relates to preparedness, aid, health, therapy and education. Where is the current focus and how can we work together to shift the focus into a more beneficial conversation about the position of art for society, marginalized groups and as part of the broader societal structure.
Confirmed participants include:
- Ingvild Lien from ASSITEJ Norway
- Bendik Nordgaard - Flying Seagulls Norway
- Cindy Horst - Research Professor at PRIO and Co-director og PRIO's Centre on Culture, Conflict and Co-existence.
- Adrián Minkowicz, comedian, writer and theatre maker.
This network meeting is open for everyone interested in the arts and its role in humanitarian aid and work. We in ASSITEJ Norway believe in people meeting and connecting across organizations and borders and hope this will be an event for new connections and collaborations.
The conversations will last about 50-60 minutes each with a few breaks, artistic interventions and short presentations. Everything will be in English and be moderated by a representative from ASSITEJ Norway. The formal starting time is 17:00 and be finished by 20:00 with mingling until 22:00.
