Sean Nordquist
A History of Civilization... Thanks to Beer!
We all know beer is the great social lubricant, but did you know that the reason we even have society is because of beer?! Join us for the best history class you've ever taken, and drink in the science, history, and industry of everyone's favorite fermented libation.
Sean Nordquist is a writer, speaker, and educator with a tendency towards storytelling. He holds a BA and an MA in environmental science, has been known to quote Shakespeare and Wu Tang Clan in the same discussion, and would absolutely love to do karaoke with you. He is also the Executive Director of the Tampa Bay Brewers Alliance, a regional non-profit with a mission to support and grow the craft beer scene in the great Tampa Bay area.
Bruce Albrecht
Women in Meteorology: An Old Nerd's Perspective
In 1976, when Bruce Albrecht began his career in meteorology, there was only one woman scientist--Joanne Simpson-- who had made an indelible mark in the field. Joanne's early work provided inspiration for Albrecht's own research endeavors. Since then, the field has witnessed the advancement of women in meteorology and the atmospheric sciences. In this generation of atmospheric scientists, the number of women has equaled or exceeded the number of men in the the field. This talk will discuss this evolution of women in meteorology and the impact they have had on the field.
Bruce Albrecht received his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from Colorado State University in 1975. He was a professor at Penn State University from 1976 to 1996 and University of Miami from 1996 to 2016. He loved teaching and had a passion for observational-based research on the effects of aerosols on marine clouds and precipitation. In 2013, Albrecht received the American Meteorological Society’s Teaching Excellence Award and in 2013 the Carl Gustaf Rossby Research Medal—the most prestigious award given by the American Meteorological Society. In retirement, Albrecht has had a lot of fun creating an app--See My Clouds--that provides a platform where students, scientists, teachers, science enthusiasts, and cloud enthusiasts can share their cloud photos.
Amy Keith
Voting in Florida: Easier than you think, Weirder than it should be
Arcane knowledge and fun facts to make your voting journey as easy as possible this year, with a peak into the dark world of voter suppression and how we can vanquish it.
Amy Keith spent 15 years working outside the United States, and when she moved back she dove deep into the most American thing of all: voting rights. Luckily, her prior careers in disaster response and hospice prepared her well for election work in Florida. Keith can't get enough of it: She is the Executive Director of Common Cause Florida and in her off-hours she volunteers on the Board of the League of Women Voters of St. Petersburg.
