By: Jonathan Chinchilla
Dive into the fascinating world of LEGO, exploring its evolution from a simple toy to a global cultural icon. Uncover intriguing facts, the power of pivoting, and its influence on nostalgia, culture, and education. See why LEGO continues to captivate and inspire across generations.
Jonathan Chinchilla arrived in San Francisco from Guatemala at the age of 5 and has spent his life in the Bay Area, eventually graduating with a degree in Architecture. He transitioned into tech during the 2008 recession and now works at Google. He shares his love of LEGO with his daughters, regularly swarming the aisles of Target and LEGO stores to "see what’s new." “How to Survive When Disaster Strikes! Lessons from Zombie Apocalypses”
By: Patrick Mulligan
Earthquakes, fires and floods are bad enough, but what comes after is worse. No water, no electricity, no food and maybe even no help for days. This may sound like the start to a zombie movie, but it doesn't have to end like one! Just sorting out food, water and entertainment is enough to keep you from joining the hordes of the undead. Find out some tips and tricks to survive the ever-looming apocalypse.
Patrick Mulligan has spent the past 15 years designing medical devices and holds an MSE in Electrical & Computing Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He now works as a Principal Design Engineer at Neuropace making implantable neurostimulators that treat epilepsy ("mind control chips"). For fun he likes to think through what-if scenarios, watch horror movies and build stuff.
“Naughty by Nuclear: The Science Behind Bombs, Supernovae, and the Nuclear Search for Extraterrestrial Life”
By: Julia DeMarines
Oppenheimer, Chernobyl, Fallout - we've seen radioactivity portrayed in cinema in recent years, but how does it actually work? Come walk through the valley of instability with us and and find out what breaks apart the Strong (nuclear) Force and how that energy can be used for energy, bombs, and maybe even detecting extraterrestrial life.
Julia DeMarines is an astrobiologist, National Geographic Explorer, educator, and science communicator who specializes in biosignature and technosignature (SETI) detection, the ethics of METI (Messaging ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) who's trying to finish a MSc at Berkeley even though she already has one. Outside of academia she enjoys garbage humor, running (but only after), climbing, adventure, pirates, nuclear power, LotR, and basically most things except raw tomatoes.
