📚☣️“Counteracting the Poison of Novels”: An Eighteenth-Century Moral Panic, by June
Masked balls, duels, silly proposals, cross-dressing, gambling, love triangles, timely deaths and long-lost daughters… If these sound like plot points out of a season of Bridgerton, it is because they are in fact staples of late-eighteenth-century novels. Before Jane Austen was established as one of the greatest English novelists of all time, critics and authors grappled with the growing popularity of this new form of entertainment and what such popularity meant for the moral well-being of the nation. With literacy on the rise and increasing access to reading materials to people of the middling ranks of society, how could the stability of the moral and social order be maintained? This is the story of how novels navigated this apprehension in the second half of the eighteenth century in Britain. As with moral panics today, the crux of the concern lay in how young people – and particularly young women – may be affected by the offending material. This generated a host of strategies on the part of authors to position their works as worthy of public commendation rather than condemnation, painting a complex and vivid picture of the book market before novels were considered a serious art form, in ways very much relevant to our own cultural moment today.
