About this Event
Bristol: These in person workshops, taking place at 14 cities across the UK, are designed to give the project a deep understanding of user needs to shape the design and delivery of this exciting new piece of national data infrastructure.
We are looking to speak with anyone who has an interest in finding, accessing and using earth science or environmental data to support their work. You don’t need to be a ‘data person’ but you might be. You might be from:
- the NHS
- a local authority
- a charity
- housing association or house builder
- central government (e.g. Defra, ONS, HSE, DfT)
- one of the environmental regulators (e.g. EA, SEPA, NRW, NIEA)
- a trade body or institution
- a utility company
- a third-party software or data company
- insurance
- an international agency (e.g. WHO, World Bank, UN agencies)
The purpose of these in person workshops is to understand potential users needs around accessing and using environmental and earth science data and integrating this with other social, economic, environmental and health data. We are keen to understand the pain points and challenges users currently face when trying to use environmental or earth science data and the value that could be unlocked by overcoming these challenges and improving access.
Some potential examples of the ways you might like to use data could be:
- you work for a respiratory charity and you want to find and use data on air quality across the country
- you are a journalist who wants to be able to access oceanographic data on coastal flooding
- you are an energy company that may be looking at green energy programmes and wants to calculate return on investment
- you’re a healthcare professional and want to combine data from Health Data Research UK and climate data
- you work in the development industry trying to future proof housing development sites from climate change related impacts
NERC (the Natural Environment Research Council) holds a unique and hugely significant treasure-trove of environmental data, collated over many years. By combining this with data from other sources and using it in new ways, we will unlock new insights to support more informed decisions, changing communities for the better. Through the development of the £7 million Digital Solutions Hub, the University of Manchester is leveraging these datasets and developing a suite of state of the art computational tools to enable those outside academia to use these resources to model, forecast and scenario plan, and better understand the impacts of climate change.
These in person workshops are part of a multi-phase user engagement plan and are being led by Open Data Manchester CIC on behalf of the University of Manchester. There will be further opportunities to engage in future user research to shape this exciting project. Please feel free to share with colleagues you think would be interested or within your networks, we are keen to engage as wide a group of stakeholders as possible.
We are committed to delivering inclusive and accessible events. Details about what we will provide as standard can be found on our website here. There is an opportunity to let us know how we can make this event more accessible for you on the booking form.
