About this Event

About the Birmingham event:

The UK holds a unique and hugely significant treasure-trove of over 40 peta-bytes of environmental data, collated over many years. This data has the potential to transform how you do your work. By combining this with data from other sources and using it in new ways, we will unlock new insights to support more informed decisions, changing communities for the better.

For an example, you might be from the NHS, a local authority, a charity, housing association or house builder, central government (e.g. Defra, ONS, HSE, DfT), one of the environmental regulators (e.g. EA, SEPA, NRW, NIEA), a trade body or institution, a utility company, a third-party software or data company, insurance or an international agency (e.g. WHO, World Bank, UN agencies).

The University of Manchester, funded by NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) would like to invite you to join us on a journey to build what we are calling the Digital Solutions Hub (DSH) with user needs at the heart of developing this next piece of national infrastructure.

Our first step in delivering this crucial national infrastructure for environmental data is organizing stakeholder workshops to explore what values accessing environmental data would bring to different actors and what challenges there are in accessing and using environmental data in the UK.

Join us in this workshop to meet those involved in producing, managing and using environmental data in your region, find out more about NERC data centres and tell us about your challenges in accessing and using environmental data. The workshop will be a good opportunity to meet the NERC Digital Solution Hub’s project team and to know more about future plans and collaboration opportunities. It will also be an opportunity to meet and network with others in your area keen to use environmental data.

We are looking to speak with anyone who has an interest in finding, accessing and using earth science or environmental data to support their work. You don’t need to be a ‘data person’ but you might be.

Some potential examples of the ways you might like to use data could be:

 you work for a respiratory charity and you want to find and use data on air quality across the country you are a journalist who wants to be able to access oceanographic data on coastal flooding you are an energy company that may be looking at green energy programmes and wants to calculate return on investment you’re a healthcare professional and want to combine data from Health Data Research UK and climate data you work in the development industry trying to future proof housing development sites from climate change related impacts

We are committed to delivering inclusive and accessible events. Details about what we will provide as standard can be found on our website here. There is an opportunity to let us know how we can make this event more accessible for you on the booking form.

Each workshop has its own Eventbrite page. Please book onto the workshop you would like to join. If you have any issues please get in touch with us.

The venue will be available from 9:30am for registration and tea/coffee. The workshops will run from 10am until 3pm with a catered lunch break in the middle.

Thank you for your interest and we look forward to seeing you at a workshops soon!
