About this Event
We would love for you to be a part of the creation of the Burrard View Park Food Forest! In fact, we need you to be a part of this as it will be a community-run project!
If you would like to be a part of this meaningful project from the ground up, from its very inception, please join us on September 26th from 6-8pm. If you can't make it on this day, there will be many more opportunities to join is as this is just one of many gatherings we will have in order to start organizing.
The idea of a community food forest is that you will be involved in the designing, planning, planting, maintenance and volunteer/community outreach for this project. This requires quite a bit of organizing so this first meeting will be to get to know each other, ask questions and talk about the steps required to make this a successful and fun community endeavour for the long run! You do not need to have any gardening experience as there will be many components to getting this project off the ground and will require many different skill sets.
Beacon Food Forest in Seattle has been operating as a community food forest for over 12 years. Please take a look at their webiste for inspiration https://beaconfoodforest.org
We are inviting people who are interested in building this project positively together. Discussions about whether the food forest should or should not be in this park will not happen at this gathering. Please contact us at [email protected] if you would like to voice your concerns about the project.
This project was approved by the Vancouver Park Board and takes important steps toward fulfilling the main goal of the Local Food System Action Plan which is “To move towards a sustainable, just and decolonized local food system by making space for Indigenous food sovereignty, increasing equitable access to food assets and services, and working towards food system resiliency as part of climate action.”
There is no definite timeline yet from the Vancouver Park Board as to when we will be able to plant but this is the perfect time to start planning! We hope that the food forest will be ready for planting this winter or spring and we can’t wait to start planning with you!
You can simply show up at the Burrard View Park Fieldhouse at 545 North Slocan Street or if you feel more comfortable RSVPing you can signup through Eventbrite or email us at [email protected]. Registration is not required <3
Snacks and drinks will be provided. We will sit inside the fieldhouse if there is no more than 15 people and if the capacity exceeds that then we will be able to sit ousitde under some tents.
The event will happen rain or shine!
See you soon neighbours!
