Beat the Devil (1953) is a magnificent forgotten classic. Directed by the legendary John Huston, from a script by Truman Capote, based off a book by Claud Cockburn, it's a twisty, romantic and gorgeous ride through paradise, with the only problem being the murderous thieves trying to rob a third-world nation of their natural resources. With an unbelievable cast starring Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones and Gina Lollobrigida, backed by a rogues gallery of classic character actors, including Edward Underdown, Robert Morley and the always perfect, Peter Lorre, this is one of the funnest and funniest geo-political thrillers ever filmed. Presented on the big screen, with newsreels, cartoon and other treats from 1953, hosted by Ygal Kaufman, Cleveland-based journalist, filmmaker and educator.
This is a donation based event to support the Negative Space Gallery. Please pay what you can and what you think is fair, but nobody will be turned away for lack of funds! Refreshments will be available at the screening.
