NCPA Umang Whispers of Tradition - "A Conversation Through Dance" Manipuri-Kathak duet by Sudip Kumar Ghosh & Sourav Roy and Aikyam- "Path to oneness" Kathak duet by Harshada Jambekar & Sanika Prabhu Umang is a platform for promising artistes. This month, we present two classical duets—Manipuri by Sudip Kumar Ghosh and Kathak by Sourav Roy and by Harshada Jambekar with Sanika Prabhu. Sudip Kumar Ghosh is a promising talent in Manipuri dance, championing impactful initiatives in the promotion and preservation of the Indian classical dance form. Born Singha Ghosh, he pursued his passion independently under Laxmi Singha and overcame many challenges before moving to Kolkata and then to New Delhi to advance his training under esteemed gurus, including K. Jatin Singh, and Chourajeet Singh. He has organised numerous workshops and festivals to make Manipuri accessible to a wider audience. As Secretary of Katchaba, a forum for Manipuri art and culture, he continues to lead initiatives that enrich the cultural landscape. He is a graded artiste of Doordarshan and a recipient of the Nrutya Kumudini, National Nritya Mani and the International Academy (USA State Music Academy) awards, among others. Currently, Ghosh teaches in Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kerala. Kathak artiste Sourav Roy has trained with Goutam Sengupta, currently, he has been under the tutelage of Kathak exponent Dr. Malabika Mitra for more than two decades. Roy has further enriched his art through workshops by eminent gurus including Birju Maharaj, Rajendra Gangani, Vijay Shankar and Kumudini Lakhia. He has acheived success and fame both in India and abroad. Roy has received the senior national scholarship from the Department of Tourism, Culture and Religious Endowments of the Government of India. He is an empanelled artiste of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC) and an ‘A’ grade artiste of Doordarshan Kolkata. Harshada Jambekar is a seasoned Kathak performer and a disciple of Dr. Manjiri Deo, Mukundraj Deo and Vasantrao Ghadge. Jambekar has completed her Kathak Nritya Alankar from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and has performed at numerous dance and cultural festivals in India and abroad. She is a Nritya Nipuna awardee from Nalanda Dance Research Centre and an ‘A’ grade Doordarshan artiste. She is the Founder Director of Katthakii, a Kathak institute in Mumbai, as well as an accredited examiner for Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. Kathak artiste Sanika Prabhu is a disciple of Kathak gurus Vasantrao Ghadge, Mukundraj Deo and Harshada Jambekar and has completed her Nritya Visharad. She is the Founder of KathakBeats, a Mumbai-based academy that teaches Kathak to students from around the world. She is a recipient of the Nritya-Pratibha at the 9th Cuttack International Dance Festival, Odisha. Currently, she is associated with the Salaam Bombay Foundation and teaches Kathak at the Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics.
