The Staten Island - National Council of Negro Women, Inc. is excited to announce our Annual Harambee Celebration on Saturday, April 20, 2024, from 12 pm to 4 pm at the Historic Old Bermuda Inn at 301 Veterans Road West, Staten Island, NY 10309.
Guests will be entertained with live music, presentations, and an award ceremony. NCNW-SI takes great pride in recognizing the following community leaders who exhibit the teachings of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune
Ticket prices are as follows:
Adult: $125
Tweens (ages 13-16): $50
Children under 12 years of age: $35
The 2024 theme is "A Path Forward Together."
The unprecedented circumstances we find ourselves in bear witness to the challenges and increased needs in our community. Harambee in Swahili means “ALL PULL TOGETHER”. It is a celebration of Community and Togetherness that was started in Kenya in 1963. This signature event gives us an opportunity to put these principles into practice and raise funds to support our outreach programs on Staten Island.
Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, born on July 10, 1875 to slaves, became one of the most important Black educators, civil and women’s rights leaders and government officials of the 20th century. Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune founded the National Council of Negro Women in 1935. Its mission is to lead, advocate for, and empower women of African descent, their families and communities by promoting STEAM education, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, economic stability, good health, civic engagement and advocating for sound public policy and social justice. Our local community outreach programs includes civic engagements – get out the vote, NCNW-SI Youth Council monthly activities; education – Public Speaking/Youth Mentoring Program, High School Scholarship and writing workshops; Young Women's Leadership program; health and wellness – deliveries of fresh fruits, vegetables and covid-19 resources to seniors; restocking COMEUnity Fridge, breast cancer awareness campaign as well as other service projects.
The Staten Island – National Council of Negro Women, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization. Proceeds from the Harambee celebration will directly benefit the mission and continuous work of our Section.
