NCDOT BeRailSafe Rail Safety Outreach presents: Off the tracks…the deadly reality of train accidents. First responders and the public will gain an understanding about the growing epidemic of train related injuries and deaths across the US and NC. Emphasis will be placed on the lack of rail education and gaps in public safety that often contribute to, rather than prevent rail tragedies and unnecessarily place first responders in harm's way. Attendees will learn to dispel deadly myths about trains and railroad environments, and gain an appreciation of basic railroad operations, duties of train crew members and critically important personal safety considerations when near railroads.
Roger Smock is a rail safety consultant for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Rail Division, BeRailSafe rail safety outreach program. BeRailSafe provides rail safety education for citizens, public safety professionals, rail, and transportation stakeholders. In addition, BeRailSafe champions railroad trespassing research and conducts case studies of crossing crashes and trespasser fatalities. After retiring in November 2013 as Commander of the NC Highway Patrol Collision Reconstruction Unit, Roger has 10 years’ experience investigating 100’s of NC rail crashes and leading rail research with NC universities.
Fuquay-Varina CERT is proud to partner with the North Carolina Department of Transportation Rail Division to present this life saving presentation.
