Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) LGBTQIA+ persons are at disproportionately high risk of experiencing violence and marginalization in Sweden and beyond. This panel talk will focus on racist practices as perpetuated in queer spaces through the lens of queer migration. Racism in queer spaces will be discussed with the help of intersectionality and further analyzed through concrete examples of weaponized orientalism and homonationalism. Moreover, the need for and the potential of decolonial queer activism will be highlighted. The panel talk will be based on a RFSL Newcomers Malmö perspective: a project for LGBTQI+ asylum seekers, migrants and refugees in Malmö and Skåne. The panel talk is intended as an interactive event: participants are encouraged to share their experiences and reflections during a Q&A session.About the speaker: Kaja Simmen is the vice-chair of RFSL Malmö, where they are most active in the RFSL Newcomers Malmö project aimed at LGBTQI+ asylum seekers, migrants and refugees residing in Malmö and Skåne. Kaja has an MA in Middle Eastern Studies and an MA International Migration and Ethnic Relations. At RFSL Malmö, they are responsible for communication and creating educational material on queer migration. Kaja is interested in decolonial queer activism, transnational migrant solidarity networks and critical race studies.
