About this course

Use your map reading skills to enjoy exploring some great walks in Nottinghamshire and gain from the health benefits of walking.

All walks  will be approx. 5- 6 miles.  The session will start with a briefing of the route.  For anyone interested there will be an opportunity to lead a section of the walk to improve map reading skills.

Each week will be a different circular walk in Nottinghamshire.

This course is ideal for learners who have attended any of the Inspire Map Reading Courses and want the opportunity for more practice or anyone who enjoys walking for health and wellbeing and wants to explore new walks in the area.  Aimed at regular walkers as the routes are longer with some varied terrain so not really suitable for beginners.

This subsidised course is programmed as part of the Miner2Major Landscape Partnership scheme.

On this course you will cover:

  • Following a route using an explorer map
  • Interpreting land features to identify the route
  • Using a compass to orientate the map and walking on a bearing
  • Discussing how to keep safe whilst out walking

For the course you will need a ruler, a compass, OS Explorer Map 270 Sherwood Forest (available from the library), a calculator or phone calculator, magnifying glass (not essential), pen and paper.

For the practical element of the course, we will be walking approx. 5 miles in the Edwinstowe and Sherwood Forest area, so walking boots, suitable clothing and a waterproof is recommended.  Walking poles optional.  Participants should be comfortable walking 5 miles and are advised to contact their GP with any health issues before attending the course.

This is a full day course, so a packed lunch is recommended.

For the course, an OS Explorer Map 270 Sherwood Forest and 260 Nottingham (available from the library) would be helpful to follow the walk.  A compass if you have one. (There will be compasses available to use on the day).

Walking boots, suitable clothing and a waterproof is recommended.  Walking poles are optional.

A snack and drink.

This course is programmed as part of the Miner2Major Landscape Partnership scheme, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
