2024 is expected to be a record-breaking year for the number of elections being held globally. In the UK, a general election is expected this year, creating uncertainty for both policy making and investment decisions. Join us to hear views on the current state of UK politics, how this is translating into the policy environment and what this might mean for clients and businesses. We will also cover state of the UK and global economy including some thoughts on the outlook for interest rates and wider capital markets. Also will try to provide some historical context on some of the geopolitical and political threats of the moment, as well as the likely impact of the leap forward of the technological frontier.

William Hobbs

Head of UK Multi Asset Wealth

William Hobbs joined Barclays in October 2005, and is the Head of UK Multi-Asset Wealth Team for Barclays Private Bank & Wealth Management. Will leads the team focussed on the core aspects of the Investment offering, setting the BUK Strategic Asset Allocation (SAA), Tactical Asset Allocation (TAA), Investment Philosophy and delivering Investment content. The CIO Team is the home of investment decisions which form and deliver our best thinking portfolios. Prior to becoming The Head of UK Multi-Asset, William held the position of Chief Investment Officer for Barclays UK Wealth Management, a position he held from December 2018.

William is a fellow of the Securities Institute and has close to 20 years of experience in the financial sector. He has Masters degrees in International Business and Economic Development from Birkbeck, University of London and Economic History from LSE. He is also a Chartered Alternative Investments Analyst. Will is a frequent contributor of economic and capital market’s insight to Bloomberg, CNBC and various other media outlets.

 Sonia Fernandes

Government Relations and Policy

Sonia recently joined Barclays in the UK Government Relations and Policy Team where she leads on policy issues including retail investing, financial inclusion and access to banking.

Prior to Barclays, she was at UK Finance for 5 years where she led the industry’s response to support households impacted by Covid-19, then cost of living. She was listed on the 2023 Women in Trade Associations Powerlist, which recognises the 100 inspirational women in associations.

Sonia has 15 years of experience in economics, public policy and research. She has held roles in the charity sector in both the UK and Australia, in the Australian Civil Service and on international posting in Vietnam.
