This interactive workshop explores the complex intersection of harm reduction, racial equity, and substance use. Participants will gain an understanding of how Stages of Change (SOC) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) are crucial components to working with the dually diagnosed population and that experimentation with drugs is a common part of development for many individuals. We will discuss how drug use often serves an adaptive or supportive function and emphasize that drug use occurs on a continuum which we must fully understand in order to treat in a trauma informed way.

The workshop will delve into the impact of stigma surrounding drug use, discussing how it hinders accurate information sharing and support, and how stigma varies based on factors such as race, class, and gender. By exploring these nuances, we aim to challenge harmful stereotypes and promote a more empathetic and informed approach to substance use. Participants will reflect on how personal values and beliefs can influence the effectiveness of our work with individuals engaging in high-risk behaviors. Understanding these dynamics is key to fostering trust and providing better support.

Finally, after exploring the core clinical theories that form the foundation of harm reduction practices, participants will have the opportunity to look at substance use through the lens of race equity and how harm reduction in practice seeks to eliminate the impact of systemic racism in the way we care for those with substance use disorder. Through case studies and group discussions, participants will gain practical insights into applying this framework in their professional work.

This workshop is designed for those working in healthcare, social services, and AOD community outreach, offering tools for creating more equitable, compassionate, and effective support systems for individuals navigating substance use.
