Navigating Big Feelings through Zine-Making (3-Day)
This workshop is open to children aged 9-12 years old.
*Participants must be able to commit to the following dates:
22 November, 10am - 5pm
29 November, 10am - 5pm
6 December, 10am - 5pm


Parents, have you ever wondered what your little ones are feeling inside but aren’t always able to effectively express through words? Through this guided 3 day course in a safe space, we will collectively uncover the complex inner worlds within them and give them confidence to express themselves through different mediums.


What's included in this workshop?

  • Low facilitator to child ratio (Maximum of 8 participants to 2 facilitators)

DAY-TO-DAY PROGRAMME BREAKDOWN

Day One:
Exploring the Possibilities of Zines and Collaborative Art

  • Showcasing of Zine samples
  • Exploring different Zine types
  • Exploring colour theory and associated emotions
  • Defining a theme for your zines through prompts and provocation questions
  • Creating your own mini zine draft
  • Nature walk and creating a found objects collage from nature
  • Collaborative drawing
  • Blind drawing exercise
  • Photo Assignment


Day Two:

Interpreting Different Layers of Emotions through Unconventional Art Making Mediums

  • Learning digital artwork softwares and creating a digital poster
  • Creating personalised stickers out of poster elements
  • Exploring how a lasercutter works and cutting out individual elements from poster elements
  • Learning about how paper can be made, and creating pages out of pulp recycled paper
  • Experimenting with colour marbling and transferring onto paper
  • Heatpressing plastic bags into upcycled sustainable sheet materials
  • Visible mending on upcycled plastic

Day Three:

Documentation, Collation and Reflection

  • Compilation and refinement of personal zines through an iterative process, with peer feedback to encourage cross-sharing
  • Learning how to bind your own books using different binding techniques
  • Video documentation of personal zine-making journey throughout camp
  • Showcase and reflection

Meet the Faciliators!

About Zhi Ru:

Zhi Ru is a designer and self-proclaimed extroverted introvert who values unexpected interactions with people, even though she finds meeting new people daunting. She believes that fun and functionality can coexist, often incorporating playful elements into her designs. She is continually inspired by the ambition and creativity of children, recognising their potential when given the right environment.
“In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn.” While her role is to impart skills and knowledge to children, their enthusiasm and creativity also inspire her. She believes that learning is a lifelong journey, and it's never too late to pick up a new skill or hobby. Zhi Ru graduated with honours in Industrial Design from the National University of Singapore. Beyond design, she enjoys sewing, fiber crafts, photography, aerial yoga, and learning new languages.


About Vivien:

Vivien is a passionate designer who harnesses the power of design to drive social change, both on a small and large scale and values empathy in creating meaningful designs, particularly in facilitating workshops and programs.

She also has a strong passion for the importance of visual design and user experience (UX), believing that well-crafted visuals and intuitive UX are crucial in making products and services accessible, engaging, and effective.

In her free time, Vivien splits her time between helping underprivileged children in their educational growth, as well as her own hobbies — including climbing, crocheting and more!

VIVITA Singapore is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering children and youth to explore, innovate, and create with confidence. We provide a space for young learners to experiment, nurturing their curiosity without the constraints of a structured curriculum.
