There are two subspecies of Western Screech-owls in British Columbia, both listed as threatened in Canada. Much of what we know about their ecology comes from work in the Interior, while the coastal subspecies has been considerably harder to study because of the dense and complex coastal habitats it occupies. In this talk, Megan will share insights from her pilot work on the coastal subspecies on Vargas Island, alongside findings from the Interior, and explore how the two may differ in their broader ecology, habitat use, and vulnerability in a changing landscape.
Megan has worked with owls for the past eight years and focused on the Interior subspecies of Western Screech-owl for her master’s research at the University of British Columbia. More recently, she has been gearing up for a PhD on the elusive coastal subspecies, with a focus on habitat requirements and health in an ever-changing landscape.
