About this Event
Nature-Based Therapy: Lessons from the Field (Fall)
This highly experiential and interactive workshop will offer the opportunity to see and feel what it is like to work outside with nature in a psychotherapy practice with clients of all ages. The training will include demonstrations, small group practice and reflection. We will explore how the models and interventions many therapists use working inside (mindfulness, somatic work, IFS, CBT) can be used effectively and even enhanced during outside sessions to support a client’s healing and growth. We will consider how taking therapy outside of the office can be part of anti-oppressive practices that expands access to mental health services.
The presenter works with children, families and adults. After you register we will reach out to by email to ask about what ages you work with or are interested in learning more about, so we can tailor the workshop to the needs of the group.
We will meet outside by Lake Hiawatha in South Minneapolis, in a space where we regularly see clients. We will be sitting on the ground, standing, and walking slowly for about a quarter mile or so. Please let us know if you have any concerns about mobility and we can figure it out together. Please wear clothing that you can be comfortable in outside for the morning. (See FAQ for the rain plan.)
The providers with Minneapolis Nature-Based Therapy have had more than 3,000 sessions outside with clients since 2021. We have learned so much and are excited to share our experiences; we want this field to grow, for the benefit of clients and providers alike.
Note: Minneapolis Nature-Based Therapy is an approved CE Provider by the Minnesota Board of Social Work. Other professions can self-submit for CEU credit. This workshop provides 3.5 CE hours.
Discounts are available for students and for clinicians from under-represented groups in the mental health field. Just use the code STUDENT at checkout to take $40 off the cost. Also feel to reach out if cost is a barrier. We are committed to making this training accessible to all.
Learning objectives for the workshop include:
1. Participants will be able to identify several benefits, barriers and contraindications related to working outside with clients.
2. Participants will gain a broad understanding of possibilities for structuring a nature-based session with clients.
3. Participants will increase their understanding of clinical intervention methods applicable to providing psychotherapy outside with clients, informed by research and practice experience.
