Learn how to make your own natural paints using ancient techniques in this two-part, hands-on workshop with Helen Coleman. In the first session, participants work with a range of local earth samples, using the levigation technique to create fine pigments suitable for paintmaking.
During the following session, these pigments are mulled with a range of natural binders to create smooth tempera, glair and gouache paints.
This workshop also covers lightfastness of natural paints, paint-pan filling and the creation of various paint additives from local materials.
Students will have time to explore these paints as art mediums, creating swatches and artworks to take home along with workshop notes.
This workshop is ideal for beginners to experienced artists who are keen to incorporate natural pigments in their practice.
