Pickens, SC — In honor of Native American Heritage Month, Hagood Mill Historic Site will host its Annual Native American Celebration on Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This signature event celebrates the rich traditions, music, and artistry of Indigenous peoples across the Southeast.
Visitors will enjoy a full day of drumming, singing, dancing, storytelling, and cultural demonstrations including Catawba pottery, beadwork, basket weaving, flint knapping, Cherokee blowgun techniques, and atlatl spear throwing. Authentic handmade crafts will be available for purchase.
Headlining this year’s event is Keepers of the Word, a drumming group from St. George, SC, representing multiple tribal heritages under the direction of Cathy Nelson. The Catawba Nation Drum will also perform, sharing the powerful rhythms of South Carolina’s oldest Indigenous tribe.
Featured guests include Nancy Basket, renowned basket maker and storyteller; Lestin Fuller, Navajo Hoop Dancer; Jered Canty, Catawba potter; Paul Snowcloud, flute musician; and Mounted Ministries with the interactive Paint the Ponies experience.
Children can enjoy crafts, face painting, and hands-on activities hosted by SCDNR and the Foothills Archaeological Society. Traditional cooking demonstrations, the Crawford Collection of prehistoric artifacts, and Barry Crawford’s ancient soapstone cooking will also be featured.
The 1845 water-powered gristmill will operate throughout the day, grinding fresh cornmeal and grits available for purchase.
Primitive camping is offered Friday and Saturday nights for $10 per person (one night) or $15 (two nights).
