Please join the ATA as we celebrate National Public Lands Day on Passage 30. Anderson Mesa has amazing views that include regular sightings of the San Francisco Peaks, Mormon Lake and the miles of shady ponderosa and juniper forests near Flagstaff. Our project area is between 1 and 3 miles from the trailhead, so we anticipate hiking between 2 an 6 miles for the day with our tools. This project is rated easy to moderate - there will be options for various levels depending on how ambitious you're feeling. All volunteers registered before 9/24 will get a free box lunch.
The theme for National Public Lands Day this year is "Together for Tomorrow", ensuring the longevity of our cherished places while fostering environmental stewardship among youth and their communities. NPLD is more than just a clean-up. It’s a chance for people to connect with their communities, fostering a kinship found among those working together for the greater good. It’s an opportunity to establish deep, meaningful connections for youth with nature by providing positive experiences outdoors. Most importantly, it’s a showcase for America’s public lands and their capacity for providing education, recreation, and overall benefits to our physical and mental health. We're excited to participate once again in 2024.
Our project will focus on Treadwork [repairing or improving the trail surface] and this means we'll be working with Mcleods, pick mattocks, rogue hoes, pulaskis, rakes and spades, but other kinds of tasks may be needed once we are on site. All tools and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided. No prior trail work experience is required - we’ll provide necessary instruction and guidance for new volunteers. Please wear long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy shoes. Bring sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, headcovering, etc. and at least 2 liters of drinking water.
Details for meeting location and final instructions will be provided to registered volunteers. Signup via the ATA website at https://aztrail.org/get-involved/volunteer/
