Join Toronto Zoo Guardians of Giraffes (Giraffe Zookeepers), the Toronto Zoo Turtle Island Conservation Steward and representatives from the Anne Innis Dagg Foundation as we recognize both National Indigenous Peoples Day and World Giraffe Day.
Start the day with us as we open the Zoo with a Smudge Ceremony at the Zoo’s Front Entrance. The Zoo’s indigenous Relations team welcome you to immerse yourself in cultural recognition and celebration with this powerful and meaningful opening of the day.
Following the Smudge Ceremony, join the Zoo in connecting National Indigenous Peoples Day and World Giraffe Day at the giraffe habitat between 11:00am and 3:00pm! There will be plenty to see and learn including:
-How First Nation, Inuit, and Metis peoples use willow as a traditional tea, medicine, and tincture
-How giraffes use willow as nutrient-rich browse
-The connections of energy exchange that the Zoo uses to ensure reciprocity between the land and the animals
-General giraffe facts and touch tables to raise awareness about the urgent conservation challenges faced by giraffes as their wild population numbers decline at an alarming rate
-Pop-up "Meet the Guardian" Talks
-Information from our partners at the Anne Innis Dagg Foundation regarding giraffe conservation efforts and their Junior Giraffe Club!
Can’t make it in person? Tune in to our 1:00pm Facebook Live surrounding World Giraffe Day and National Indigenous Peoples Day
