Our community will come together again to honor the lives of all boarding school survivors and our relatives who never made it back home. These relatives would have been our elders today. They stole future knowledge keepers, first language speakers, medicine people, grandmas & grandpas.
Colorado had at least 11 Indian boarding schools, 9 of which were directly funded or supported by state or federal resources, and all of which directly impacted the children and multiple generations of the Ute Tribal Nations located within Colorado as well as at least 30 other Tribal Nations across the United States.
These 11 schools were spread throughout the state; Grand Junction Indian Boarding School, Fort Lewis Indian Boarding School, Southern Ute Board School, Navajo Day School,
Allen Day School, Towaoc Day School, Good Shepherd Industrial School for Girls, State Industrial School for Boys, Ignacio School, Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind here in the Springs, and Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City.
We will begin the walk at the Colorado School for the Deaf & Blind where Ute students were housed from 1893-1894. There is residential area parking. We will leave the school to walk down Pikes Peak to City Hall, read the National Day of Awareness Proclamation and then proceed to the Catholic Diocese. The walk is 1.3 miles. We will have a van at the end of the walk to transport any Elders or those with mobility issues back to their cars.
