Nap Eyes’ metamorphic fifth long-player collects a cache of nine fascinating songs recorded over the four years since Snapshot of a Beginner. The Neon Gate reveals classic touchstones (the uneasy interplay of physics and philosophy, perambulatory meditations, self-interrogating soliloquies, apertures of surreality, video games), but also evidence of divergent impulses toward nonlinear abstraction and longform improvisational composition (resulting in their most discursive, deconstructed, and deliquescent songs to date) and narrative and lyric formality (including adaptations of thorny poems by Alexander Pushkin and W. B. Yeats), imparting the sense that Nap Eyes have transmuted, as has their understanding of what a song is, what it can do, where it might go. To date they have released 5 albums. Early Nap Eyes albums were recorded “live-to-tape”, eschewing overdubs. The Neon Gate has taken a more expansive production approach, incorporating synthetic elements and textures, while still making regular use of an organic, live-off-the-floor recording style. They have toured widely, and supported MJ Lenderman, Alvvays, Fleet Foxes, Guided By Voices, and Car Seat Headrest.

Ushering twenty-something’s down the aisle of adolescence into adulthood, Flwr Grl’s brand of locket rock explores the fine line between the mundane and the meaningful. The Niagara-based songwriter Kiki Klassen (formerly of the Bae Beach Club) combines the vocal dexterity of Phoebe Bridgers with the soft-indie-rock inclinations of Julien Baker and Said the Whale. Klassen’s power pop songs have blossomed from casual bedroom demos into fully produced earworms.
