Participants will weave a 4-inch Nantucket Style Basket with a cherry or maple hardwood trim. Due to the steps in the basket making process, this is an all day workshop. The basket is made with a solid slip-on rim and therefore does not require lashing. Students will learn how to prepare the materials which will be used in constructing the basket. Preparation involves sanding the wooden components: base, rim, and staves (and lid if student chooses to add the extra component). Students will also add finish to the wooden components. Students will then learn how to set up the staves in the base, prepare the weaver, weave a plain weave pattern, add weavers as needed, and pack the basket. Students will learn how to cut the staves for rimming, rim the basket, and peg the base. Light sanding will be applied to wooden pieces and a final coat of finish will be applied to the basket. The workshop will take place April 19th from 9am to 4pm with a break for lunch. All required tools and finishing materials will be supplied. The workshop is limited to 8 participants, 16 and up. Preregistration is required. The cost for the workshop is $75. Additional add-ons can be purchased as well.
