Outspoken Chilean indie folk-rock singer-songwriter leads the new wave of Chilean music, Thurs. Oct. 10 at BlueShore at CapU.
Powerhouse Chilean musician Nano Stern weaves together the fierce spirit of traditional Chilean revolutionary song with African and European elements to create a ground-breaking sound entirely his own.
Hailed by folk legend Joan Baez as “the best young Chilean songwriter of his generation,” Stern brings a masterful command of multiple instruments, staggering vocal range and passionate advocacy to his fresh and relevant music: folk, rock and trova, infused with the depth of classical and jazz training. On stage, Stern blends Spanish and electric guitars, piano, violin and Andean and Nordic flutes into his music, while singing in Spanish and telling stories in English to give context to his songs.
Stern recently released his ninth album I Still Believe in Beauty. The career-defining record is a culmination of sonic and lyrical exploration that has expanded his creative horizons.
Last year, Stern released an album, toured the world, and produced the documentary We’ll Be Singing by September – all paying homage to the legacy of Víctor Jara, the Chilean folk musician and political activist whose life and career were tragically cut short during a military coup in 1973. Stern sees himself as part of a continuum of artists whose responsibility is to honour the past and build a foundation for the future.
“The maestro’s ultra-soulful singing (in passionate, atmospheric Spanish) and virtuosity on guitar and violin are never less than mesmeric,” states the Week End Australian.
“The spirit of the late Victor Jara and Violeta Parra hovers over the singer-songwriter as he digs deep into his inner worlds and landscapes. Aesthetic beauty abounds, musically and poetically,” says Rhythms Magazine.
