Our culture, beliefs, shared values and experiences can impact and play vital roles in our mental and physical health. NAMI Hawaii believes in the possibility of recovery, wellness, and the potential in all of us.
Come learn from our speakers and community on different cultural practices that promote mental health wellness, and celebrate the diversity of our community through different presentations and wellness exercises.

1. Mental Wellness & the African American Community: A Panel Discussion from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Lambda Chi Omega, Honolulu, Hawaii
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Lambda Chi Omega Chapter is the first intercollegiate historically African American sorority. The sorority was founded on January 15, 1908, at the historically black Howard University in Washington, D.C. The panel consists of local members within the chapter and partners will share experiences and practices from the African American community.

2. Discerning & Gathering Your La'au (Medicines) Daily
Ileana Haunani Ruelas, CEO, Kahua Kukulu LLC, MA, Sociology (Social Movements in Hawaii)
Gathering our la'au (medicines) - collective and individual - is a foundational practice for Mauli Ola (continuity of healing). In this workshop we will practice elements of gathering our la'au - including ho'olono (listening), pilina 'aina (relationship/cultivation), mo'olelo (stories) & movement.
· How do we discern, gather, and nurture our la'au (medicine)?
· What practices help us to carve sacred space to navigate transitions and changing seasons within our lives?
3. Healing Gardens
Christine Hanakawa, 4H, Alexis Kerver and Dr. Thao le from AG Mental Health Mentors Program, and Dr. Mestisa Gass, PsyD.
· Why gardening is important for mental health
· 4H programming for youth
· Alexis and Thao for SOW- mental health in agriculture
· Plant exercise
Who should participate?
Providers, mental health professionals, law enforcement, faith leaders, community members, family members and peers in recovery and anyone else who is looking to increase cultural awareness and how it impacts mental health.
