NAIDOC Week 2021- Traditional Basket Weaving and Placemat Workshop.
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
Marra Dreaming is a cultural community centre located in the Northern suburbs of Adelaide. It was established in 1999 by predominately Aboriginal women from various regions of Australia. It was initially set up to provide a space for Aboriginal people to develop their artwork and is now a thriving meeting place for community to experience and explore the Aboriginal culture. Marra Dreaming specialises in traditional basket weaving, beading, Aboriginal art, canvas painting, porcelain painting, feather-flowers, placemats and bookmarks.
Artists from Marra Dreaming will run a dot painting/place-mat painting and a basket weaving workshop at the library to celebrate NAIDOC Week. Participants will be able to take their placemats home after the session and baskets will be displayed around the library.
