About this Event

The Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership and Strategy (OATSILS) of the University of Canberra would like to invite you to the unveiling of the Ngunnawal Centre Pillar Artwork by artist, JENNIFER KEMARRE MARTINIELLO.

Recently, the OATSILS and Campus Estate asked Aunty Jenni if she would like to paint one of our pillars on UC campus just outside of the Ngunnawal Centre, showcasing her beautiful artwork around the NAIDOC 2021 theme this year, ‘Heal Country.’

Aunty Jenni’s Bio:

Aunty Jenni is an Australian Aboriginal (Sthn. Arrernte) glass artist. She is best known for her hot blown glass sculptures inspired by traditional woven objects. She is also known for her advocacy for and support of Indigenous artists. A graduate of the Canberra School of Art (now School of Arts and Design, ANU). Aunty Jenni was introduced to glass as a medium for her artwork during a group residency at the Canberra Glassworks in 2008. Her current body of traditionally inspired work pays tribute to the oldest living weaving traditions in the world, and provides recognition for those ancient cultural practices through the contemporary medium of glass within the aesthetics of both.

Her awards include the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award 2013, the Bay of Fires Arts Prize 2016. She has been a finalist in the Tom Malone, Hindmarsh, Fuse Art Glass, Ranamok and Waterhouse Prizes. She has received Canberra Critics’ Awards for both Literature and Visual Arts and received Creative Arts Fellowships from artsACT and the Australia Council for the Arts. Jennifer is an Australian Design Award Honouree 2015, and has been recognised for her community arts and cultural development work with an ACT International Women’s Day Award 2010, inclusion on the ACT Centenary Honour Role 2013, ACT Women’s Honour Role 2014 and ACT Senior Australian of the Year nomination in 2018.

Come along and hear from Aunty Jenni and view her incredible and deadly masterpiece - we hope to see you there!
