About this Event
Join the Washington, DC chapter of the Netherland-America Foundation as we gather at Ambassador Birgitta Tazelaar's residence to hear from Russell Shorto about his new book, Taking Manhattan: The Extraordinary Events That Created New York and Shaped America (W.W. Norton).
In this sequel of sorts to his best-selling history of Manhattan's founding, The Island at the Center of the World, Mr. Shorto "tells the riveting story of the birth of New York City as a center of capitalism and pluralism, a foundation from which America would rise. It also shows how the paradox of New York’s origins — boundless opportunity coupled with subjugation and displacement — reflects America’s promise and failure to this day" (russellshorto.com).
This event is free to attend, a reception will follow our conversation with Mr. Shorto, and books will be available for purchase courtesy of Solid State Books.
