About this Event
This workshop is held in the context of International Women’s Day, women’s script from southern China that was historically created and used by women to communicate feelings, stories, and support with one another, a moment to pause and reflect on women’s voices, care, and shared memory.
Nüshu calligraphy introduces participants to a women’s script from southern China that was historically created and used by women to communicate feelings, stories, and support with one another. It was often written in private, passed between sisters, friends, and mothers, carrying emotions that could not always be spoken openly.
The workshop begins with a brief introduction to thecultural background of Nüshu and its place within women’s everydaylives. Participants will then be guided through the basic visual structureand rhythm of Nüshu calligraphy, including brush handling, strokeflow, and the softness that characterises the script.
Rather than focusing on correctness, the session emphasizesattentiveness and intention. Participants are invited towriteslowly, allowing personal meanings, memories, or feelings toshapetheircalligraphy. Each person will create their own Nüshucalligraphypiece on paper to take home.
No prior experience with the Chinese language or calligraphyisrequired. All materials are provided. The workshop is open to all genders and backgrounds, and welcomes anyone whowishestoengage with women’s cultural heritage through writing.
