Explore Māori settlements, one of New Zealand's oldest farms, military fortifications, and prison buildings, on a guided walking tour of Mātai Moana, Miramar.First settled in the 1350s, Mātai Moana / Mount Crawford has a rich and layered history of Māori settlement and conflict, early agriculture, and farming, military fortifications, and changing prison populations.
Today, it is a predator-free paradise for a thriving native wildlife population, occasional filming site, and much-loved recreation space for locals and visitors alike.
Join Kate Curtis, history educator and creator of the Mātai Moana historic trail map, on a guided walking tour full of stories of life up the hill. The tour will begin outside the now-closed Wellington Prison, and end with a cuppa in the historic Miramar Prison Garden.
Children and on-leash dogs are welcome.
