[French and Thai below]In this digital era, artists and photographers have been asked to become the curators of their own galleries or portfolios on social media and internet platforms. For Thierry Facon, this is becoming critical, it is energy-consuming and can also corrupt the creative process. Artists are encouraged to create NFTs (Non Fungible Tokens) and to populate, and compete for space, in the metaverse and a virtual marketplace. They are increasingly considered as content creators who must market themselves on social media to promote their work.
In this show, visual artist and photographer Thierry Facon shows that artists can reclaim ownership of the galleries and of the environment of their works in the metaverse by creating these galleries as artist-owned works of art that belong to art history, and showcase their work in the best possible way. Fortunately, what is an imposition can be turned into something pleasant and playful.
Employing history and images into new configurations, Thierry Facon looks at art history, society and very contemporary motifs to address the expanding digital landscape we are immersed in. The metaverse and history collide as a comment on new ways of envisioning our world.
The different galleries in the show, which are like rooms of the metaverse, are composite images inspired by works of art from several traditions he particularly likes, and showcase series of photographs and composite images from his body of work. They keep a hand-made do-it-yourself feeling and reflect his joy in creating them.
Their aesthetics can be captured by what Witold Gombrowicz wrote: “ Transporting the most up-to-date contraband on old-fashioned bench wagons, that’s what I like. ”
The galleries echo each other by showcasing the other galleries in the show, or different versions of themselves in a mise en abyme, suggesting how one can navigate between the different rooms and perhaps become trapped in a metaverse labyrinth.
Four of the galleries in the show are surrounded by some of the works (photographs or composite images) displayed on their walls, while two are shown in several versions, illustrating key aspects of the creative process. The gallery opening the exhibition (L’ARCHIDUC) shows all the other galleries and acts as a map of the exhibition.
The "creator" role is played in the images by THE PHOTOGRAPHERS, a series of ironic and surrealistic self-portraits that visit the different rooms of the metaverse. In the show, they escape the images as ghost-like figures, visiting the show they have become part of as works of art, as they do in rooms of the metaverse.
The metaverse and other dimensions of our digital landscape may very well never develop or collapse. These images will continue to exist in the real world. They may become relics of worlds that were, or almost were.

Dans cette ère digitale, les artistes et les photographes ont dû devenir les conservateurs de leurs propres galeries ou portfolios tant sur les réseaux sociaux que sur les plateformes en ligne. Pour Thierry Facon, ce phénomène, devenu critique et énergivore, peut également corrompre le processus créatif. Les artistes sont encouragés à créer des NFT (Non Fungible Tokens), à peupler, et à entrer en compétition dans le métavers et autres marchés virtuels, pour l’espace qu’ils occupent et la valorisation de ce qu’ils présentent. Ils sont considérés comme des créateurs de contenu qui doivent se mettre en valeur sur les réseaux sociaux pour promouvoir leur travail.
Dans cette exposition, l'artiste plasticien et photographe Thierry Facon montre que les artistes peuvent se réapproprier ces galeries et l'environnement de leurs œuvres dans le métavers, en créant ces espaces comme des œuvres d'art qui leur appartiennent, s’intègrent dans l'histoire de l'art, servent d’écrins à leurs œuvres, et existent dans le monde réel et non virtuel. Ce qui est initialement une imposition peut être transformé en quelque chose d'agréable et ludique.
Utilisant l'histoire et les images dans de nouvelles configurations, Thierry Facon se penche sur l'histoire de l'art, la société et des motifs très contemporains pour aborder le paysage numérique en expansion dans lequel nous sommes aujourd’hui plongés. Le métavers et l'histoire se heurtent pour exprimer un point de vue sur de nouvelles façons d'envisager notre monde.
Les galeries de l'exposition, qui sont autant de salles du métavers, sont des images composites inspirées d'œuvres issues de plusieurs traditions que l’artiste affectionne, et présentent des séries de photographies et d'images composites issues de son œuvre. Ces images semblent bricolées. Leur esthétique évoque cette phrase de Witold Gombrowicz: « Transporter la contrebande la plus actuelle sur des chars à bancs vieillots, voilà qui me plaît. ”
Les galeries se font écho en présentant les autres galeries sur leurs murs, ou bien différentes versions d'elles-mêmes dans une mise en abyme, suggérant comment on peut naviguer entre les différentes salles et peut-être se perdre dans un métavers labyrinthique.
La galerie ouvrant l'exposition présente toutes les autres galeries, telle une carte de celle-ci. Quatre galeries sont quant à elles entourées de certaines des œuvres (photographies ou images composites) exposées sur leurs murs, tandis que deux autres sont présentées en plusieurs versions, illustrant des aspects clés du processus de création.
Le rôle de "créateur" est joué dans les images par THE PHOTOGRAPHERS, des autoportraits ironiques et surréalistes qui visitent les différentes salles du métavers. Dans l'installation, ils échappent aux images comme des figures fantomatiques visitant l'exposition dont ils font partie, devenus eux-mêmes des œuvres d'art, comme ils le font dans les salles du métavers.
Il se peut que le métavers et les autres pas de notre paysage numérique ne se développent jamais ou s'effondrent. Ces images continueront d'exister dans le monde réel, et deviendront peut-être des reliques d’univers qui ont -presque- existé.
