Worldwide, an increasing number of children are growing up speaking more than one language. Multilingualism is associated with early developmental advantages, offers economic benefits for individuals, and can make a significant contribution to a country’s GDP. However, raising a multilingual child can come with challenges and caregivers, practitioners and teachers often long for more information on how to properly do it. In this talk, I will address some common misconceptions about early multilingualism and give hands-on tips on how to support multilingual children so that they can develop all their languages successfully. Our expert speaker is Stephanie Wermelinger, senior researcher at the University of Zurich in the research unit Developmental Psychology: Infancy and Childhood. She is the head of a research group investigating the communicative behaviour of monolingual and multilingual children.
