Vikings are everywhere in pop culture but how much do we really know about them? How can we separate fact from fiction? Join historian Terri Barnes for a discussion about several of the most popular myths and misconceptions about those intrepid Nordic people we call “Vikings.” She’ll set the record straight with the most up-to-date research and information available. You’ll never see Vikings in the same way again.Meet your instructor, Terri Barnes
Terri has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History and a master's degree in history from Portland State University. Her primary area of historical research and teaching is medieval northern Europe, with particular emphasis on the history of the Viking Age. She has also worked on medieval English history. As a social and cultural historian, she tends toward investigating how societies in the past functioned and how cultures developed and influenced (and were influenced by) others. She is very interested in a relatively new area of historical inquiry, microhistory, which delves much deeper into elements of everyday life. Her goal has always been to try and walk alongside the people of the past in an effort to understand who they were, what they valued, and what motivated them to do what they did. Currently, she is also investigating how people in the present engage with the past and why they do so.
