Dr Iain McGilchrist (born 1953) is a British psychiatrist known for his books The Master and his Emissary (2009) and The Matter with Things (2021).These works explore the two hemispheres of the brain and their influence on Western thought.
McGilchrist's unique path began with English literature at Oxford University, followed by a career shift to medicine. He became a consultant psychiatrist and researcher at prestigious institutions like the Maudsley Hospital and Johns Hopkins. Now residing on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, he continues to write and lecture, challenging our understanding of the human mind.
Bp John Roundhill (Bishop for the Southern Region of our diocese) writes: "I feel I am late to the game with Iain McGilchrist, but even that thought has not dampened my enthusiasm for his thinking. His YouTube lectures, the podcasts he is a guest on, and the ideas that flow from his writing recall for me the excitement of knowledge that I remember experiencing as a young man".

Bp John will introduce us to legacy of Iain McGilchirst in the sermon as part of Evensong.
